Epoetin
Epoetin alfa is a human erythropoietin produced in cell culture using recombinant DNA technology.
Authorised by the European Medicines Agency on 28 August 2007, it stimulates erythropoiesis and is used to treat anemia, commonly associated with chronic kidney failure and cancer chemotherapy.
It is used to treat severe anemia in patients on kidney dialysis or for those not on dialysis. It may also be used to prevent or treat anemia that is caused by surgery or medicines (eg, zidovudine) that are used for other conditions, such as HIV or cancer.
What is epoetin alfa
This is a man-made form of a protein that helps your body produce red blood cells. This protein may be reduced when you have kidney failure or use certain medications. When fewer red blood cells are produced, you can develop a condition called anemia.
